VENUS — Venus fans have waited for this day for nearly three years.

Season after season, loss after loss, when would it stop?

Homecoming, September 21, 2007; that’s when.

The Bulldogs beat Ft. Worth Northside 21-7, to snap a 29 game losing streak.

“It’s been a long time coming for this community, this school, and these kids, and it’s just a great feeling.”, said Venus Head Coach Coby Tyson.

Tyson, in his first year at Venus, has done something the fans could get used to, and that’s win.

The Bulldogs (1-2) started the game with a fumble, recovered by Northside’s sophomore defensive lineman, Marco Pina.

The Bulldog defense went to work quickly forcing a Northside fumble three plays later, that was recovered by defensive end Omar Sebita.

Venus took the ball 75-yards in 14 plays, capped by a Julio Rodriquez touchdown run of 24-yards. Rey Armendarez’ kick was good, giving Venus a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldog defense held Northside to 4 and out giving the ball back to the offense.

On second-and-4 from the Bulldog 36, quarterback C.J. Dunham connected with Rodriquez on a 42-yard pass giving Venus a first down on the Northside 19. After a 10-yard penalty on the Bulldogs it was now second and 16.

Dunham dropped back to pass and was picked-off by Martin Rodriquez of Northside, who ran the ball back 72-yards for a touchdown. Jorge Martinez’ kick was good, knotting the game at 7.

Manuel Najera returned a squib kick by Martinez 48 -yards, setting up a 10-yard touchdown run by Julio Rodriquez five plays later, making the score 14-7 Venus with 10:29 left to play in the half.

Two possessionslater the Bulldogs took over at their own 20-yard line. Nine plays and the Bulldogs had first-and-goal on the 8-yard line. Dunham attempted a pass that was intended for Najera, which fell incomplete setting up second-and-goal. Dunham dropped back to pass and was picked off by free safety Marcos Bonilla, who returned the ball back to the line of scrimmage. After a 22-yard run by Northside quarterback Edgar Trevino, the half ended with the Bulldogs still leading by seven.

To start the second half Northside quarterback Trevino hit receiver Jesse Morales for 6-yards, giving Northside third-and-4 from their own 34.

On the next play, defensive back Kyle Latham broke up a pass forcing a Northside punt.

Three plays later Dunham coughed up the ball giving Northside possession in Bulldog territory.

On third-and-11 from the Bulldog 41, Armendarez intercepted a Trevino pass, giving Venus the ball back on the 37-yard line.

With just under 7 minutes left in the game Northside’s Marcos Bonilla bobbled a 62 yard Junior Garcia punt. Alonso Bobadilla recovered and returned to the Northside 14-yard line. Two plays later junior running back Frankie Riley sprinted 10-yards for the score, sealing the victory for Venus and breaking that 29 game losing streak.

“The game ball is going to get signed by all of them (the players),” Tyson said. “I always keep the first victory ball at every school I’ve been at.”

Next week the Bulldogs travel to Rio Vista to try and start a new streak, one that involves winning.
