The Waxahachie Indian varsity golf team opened the spring season Friday in the  Marvin Dameron Invitational held at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.

Robert Keith led the Indians with 79-78 and finished eighth as the Indians placed second overall as a team.

“Considering the lack of practice time the boys played pretty well. The varsity boys have two first place, one second place and a fourth place finish so far this year,” coach Ron Siebert said.

Ryan Galligan tied for the first round lead with a 74 on Friday before shooting an 84 Saturday to finish 10th overall.

Bailey Bass shot 78-83, Billy Ott 77-84 and Cody Martin 85-88 to help the Indians place second.

Waxahachie shot a 308 on Friday to take a seven-stroke lead into Saturday but Saint Thomas rallied on Saturday to jump from third to first shooting a 313.

Waxahachie shot a 329 on Saturday to finish at 637 while Saint Thomas edged the Indians with a score of 635.

Midway, the host school, finished third with a score of 640 after shooting 315 Friday and a 325 Saturday.

Waxahachie will play Tuesday at Pecan Valley in a make-up tournament.

The Lady Indians will play in the Pecan Valley tournament Friday and Saturday.
