ENNIS — Whatever head coach Robert Chaney has been telling his team at halftime lately is apparently working.
After outscoring Waxahachie 17-3 in the third quarter last Friday, Ennis used another big third quarter to beat Lancaster 55-48 on Tuesday, forcing a three-way tie for first place in District 15-4A.
Defense was the key early on as Ennis and Lancaster combined for just 12 points in the first quarter, which ended with the Lions holding a 7-5 lead.
Things picked up quite a bit in the second quarter as Lancaster outscored Ennis 14-12 to send the game into halftime tied at 19-19.
The third quarter is when Ennis made its run and it did it with defense.
Lancaster managed just four points in the third quarter as Ennis took a 31-23 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth, both teams stepped it up on the offensive end as they both scored over 20 points.
Ennis, behind clutch free throws and defensive stops, eventually held on for the 55-48 win.
Reggie Curry and Chris Ballard led Ennis with 12 and 10 points respectively.
