MIDLOTHIAN - In an intensely physical defensive struggle, the Lady Tigers of Corsicana defeated winless Midlothian 40-35 last night in Midlothian.

During the first half neither team could mount more than a four point lead as the score was tied four times. When the dust finally settled on the first half Corsicana took a 13-11 lead into the intermission.

Tawana Davis tallied three of her seven points in the opening period. But, the difference in the first half was the Corsicana half court trapping defense that caused a dozen turnovers. Yet, Midlothian hung right in there, forcing Corsicana to turn the ball over 11 times.

The second half was more productive point wise, but the game remained very physical. Midlothian was able to make only four of 14 free throws compared to 16 of 25 for Corsicana. The Lady Tigers also owned the boards pulling down 39 rebounds, 18 offensively, to Midlothianís 26.

Trailing by six points going into the final period Midlothian tried to stage a comeback, but the determined Lady Tigers held them off and actually built a 10 point lead with two minutes left in the game. Midlothian staged a late rally on the shooting of Meagan Marks but could not pull out their first win in district play.

Briana Cleveland led all scorers in the contest with eight points. Amari Dowell had five points, but pulled down 11 boards, eight on the offensive end.

Midlothian was led by freshman Cameron Hartson with seven points.

The Lady Panthers fall to 0-10 in district play, while Corsicana improves to 4-6. Midlothian will travel to Red Oak (2-8) Friday night and finish its season on Tuesday at home against defending state champion Waxahachie (5-5). Corsicana will host Arlington Seguin (10-0) on Friday and complete district play in Ennis (6-5) on Tuesday.
