WAXAHACHIE — The Mustangs extended their bid as one of the best 4A teams in both Ellis County and the state Friday night after throttling Stephenville High School 68-40 at LWHS Gymnasium.

Life Waxahachie High School (25-7, 10-1) beat the Yellowjackets for the second time this season, sweeping the district series that began on Jan. 17.

They lost 75-28 in the first meeting.

During the second encounter, a 28-point blowout, the Mustangs used points from 13 of its 15 players to rout Stephenville and control each of the four quarters — including an 18-7 run in the second. The bulk of the Yellow Jackets scoring came in the third, where they totaled 12 points behind a Coby Vandenberg (6 pts), Kai Williams (4 pts) and Quade Griffin (3 pts) led surge.

Though junior Justin Nimmer's 14 points led the Mustangs, Life Waxahachie received contributions from Armani Holmes (3 pts), Blaine Stacy (3 pts), Daniel Nguyen (2 pts), Lyndon Williams (2 pts) and David Thompson (2 pts).

Vernon Johnson, Gage Mayfield and Nicholas Nguyen scored six points each and Bryan Moreland and Joshua Sanders scored five apiece.

Noah Thomas added four points.

The win didn't only mark Life Waxahachie's ninth win since falling to co-district leader Midlothian Heritage High School on Jan. 3. It kept the team deadlocked in first place in District 8-4A with the cross county Jaguars.

The Mustangs are also the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches No. 17 boys' 4A team and one spot lower on the poll than Midlothian Heritage.

Life Waxahachie will close out the regular season against Glen Rose High School at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at GRHS Gymnasium.
