CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Less than a year into their collegiate volleyball careers, Red Oak High School products Aisja Jones and Tapanga Moten are already making waves.
Moten, a 2016 Red Oak High School graduate, joined Shaw University's Kelly Murphy as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie and Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Moten's nabbing of week four Rookie of the Week honors comes seven days after Jones was named in week three. Moten posted 35 kills last week and help the Shaw Lady Bears finish the week 5-0 and Jones generated 27 kills and had a week-high nine kills during a victory against Chowan University (NC) on Sept. 18.
Jones also registered 37 digs during the week, including 12 against the Johnson & Wales University Lady Hawks. Moten, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter, had a week-high 12 kills against Virginia Union University. She also registered two blocks three times (vs. Converse, Lincoln and Bowie State Universities).
She leads the team with 24 blocks on the season.
“Tapanga and Aisja have been consistent go-to players in my starting six rotation this season," said Dishondra Goree, Shaw University's head volleyball coach. "I am very impressed with their energy level and competitiveness. Regardless of the fact that they are both freshmen, they have adjusted quickly to our fast pace style of play. I am excited that they are Shaw Bears."
Murphy earned Player of the Week honors after registering a total of 68 kills in five matches. She tallied double-digit kills three times, including a week-high 18 kills against Lincoln, 12 digs twice (vs. Converse and Virginia Union) and six service aces vs. Lincoln.
Murphy completed the week with a hitting percentage of .314 and an average of 4.53 kills per set.
Jones, Moten, Murphy and the Shaw Lady Bears (11-5 overall, 8-0 CIAA) are scheduled return to host to division foe Winston-Salem State University (11-5 overall, 7-1 CIAA) at 7 p.m. Thursday at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
