Hugh Bryant Wesson
LaRue - Hugh Bryant Wesson, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in LaRue, Texas, Wednesday, February 17, 2021, surrounded by family and friends.
Hugh was born June 17, 1948, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Billy Hugh Wesson and Doris "Charlene" Wesson. He was the second of four children. As a young child, Hugh's family moved to Waxahachie, Texas. He graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1967. After graduation, Hugh enlisted in the US Army. He was assigned to the 18th Military Police Brigade, where he served as a traffic MP and shore patrol officer in Vietnam. After his tour in Vietnam, he served as a correctional officer at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Hugh married Debra Diane Clark, of Red Oak, Texas on November 12, 1969. After his discharge from the Army, Hugh and Debra returned to Ellis County to start their family. They had one son, Geoffrey Scott Wesson on May 22, 1972. They made their home in Waxahachie, where they lived until Debra's death, January 22, 1979.
Hugh married Carol Miller, of Dallas on June 1, 1980 in Waxahachie, where Hugh, Judy and Geoff resided until May of 1991.
Hugh was a fire fighter for the Waxahachie Fire Department until December, 1971. He then began a 33-year career with the Dallas Fire Department. Hugh climbed up through the ranks, and retired as Captain. Hugh was a strong and fair leader. He had a servant's heart and a true love for helping others. He earned a Medal of Valor for rescuing two girls from a fully involved house fire in Oak Cliff, Texas.
Hugh and Judy moved from Waxahachie to LaRue, Texas in 1991, where they built their home and planned on retiring. They lived there together until Judy's death on April 25, 2004.
Hugh married his third and final love, Karen Lee Perkins, of Athens, Texas on may 28, 2005. Hugh retired from the Dallas Fire Department on September 30, 2005. He enjoyed his years of retirement traveling with Karen, working on a range of projects in his impressive workshop, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Hugh was a jack of all trades, and was more then happy to share his wealth of knowledge with anyone eager to learn. He was engaging and interesting conversationalist and story teller. If you were lucky enough to get in on one of those conversations, you undoubtedly left entertained, and having learned something you didn't already know. Hugh suffered with several life-altering injuries and illnesses, making the last few years of his life more challenging to travel. Even with his mobility struggles, Hugh's ingenuity and fighting spirit enabled him to enjoy his time with family and friends. Although Hugh's physical challenges no longer allowed for him to do the work himself, he would gladly provide the direction and expertise to anyone who was willing to learn. If you had thick enough skin, and some determination, you came out on the end of one of those projects with a new skill set. Hugh was a problem solver and believed if you could do something yourself, you should. His favorite project was any project that both he and his son got to work on together.
