BRYAN - Retired Waxahachie Police Chief Bobby Whitmire was in Bryan on Monday for an interview.

According to KBTX-TV, Bryan City Manager David Watkins said Whitmire was the panelís unanimous pick to serve as interim police chief.

If hired, Whitmire would serve only until a fulltime replacement is selected.

Watkins said hiring a temporary chief became necessary when the timeline for the departure of current Police Chief Mike Strope was moved up.

Strope announced his retirement in October 2005 in order to work with a consulting firm but had agreed to stay on in a reduced role until the city could find a replacement.

However, just days ago, Strope said he would have to end his term as chief as of Feb. 25.

Whitmire began his time as the Waxahachie police chief in January 2002 and retired in December 2005.

The city of Waxahachie then contracted with Texas First to bring in interim Police Chief Charles Shaffer.

A search is under way for a permanent chief for Waxahachie.
