AUSTIN (AP) _ One man was in critical condition Monday after a homebuilt helicopter caught fire and crashed into a rural field.

The pilot, Raymond Mitchell, 65, did not suffer serious injuries when the helicopter went down in Bartlett, north of Austin, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger.

A 72-year-old passenger, William Aldridge of Austin, was in critical condition with second- and third-degree burns, Vinger said.

Officials were investigating the cause of the crash.

The helicopter, which had taken off from Bartlett, was en route to Oklahoma on a business trip.

The homebuilt Robinson R-22 was destroyed.
