With the possibility of Hurricane Dean making landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast, the American Red Cross has established an emergency volunteer training session for Wednesday in DeSoto.

Volunteers who attend this training will be equipped to work in Red Cross shelters and trained to feed masses of people who could be evacuated to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Volunteers need to attend just the one day of training.

The class will be offered from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 310 Roaring Springs, DeSoto. The course is on mass care and shelter operations.

“Whether Dean makes landfall, forcing evacuees to North Texas, remains to be seen, but one thing is certain. If it’s not Dean, then it will be another storm in the future so the American Red Cross urges volunteers to train now,” a spokesman said.

To register for the course, visit www.redcrossdfw.org and select the chapter that serves your community. Volunteers can also call to register for courses. In the Dallas area, call (214) 678-4800.
