GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. (AP) _ A driver stopped his car on a major Philadelphia-area bridge on Thursday, blocking traffic as he pulled police into a standoff during the evening rush hour.
The impasse ended with the man in custody along with a woman also in the vehicle, who was unharmed, authorities said. A 1-year-old boy was also in the vehicle and was later taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Capt. Al Della Fave of the New Jersey State Police said troopers had tried to pull the vehicle over for speeding but the driver failed to stop.
Police from the Delaware River Port Authority then told state police the SUV was stopped on the Walt Whitman Bridge, which carries Interstate 76 over the Delaware River between south Philadelphia and Gloucester City, N.J.
At one point, the man got out with the child and began swinging a baseball bat at passing vehicles, slightly damaging two, said Chief Vincent Borelli of the Port Authority police.
The two were in police custody. The child will be turned over to welfare officials, authorities said.
