Alvarado Lion’s Club is hosting a community blood drive with Carter BloodCare, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Brookshire’s Grocery Store,1093 W. State Highway 67, Alvarado.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Jacob Wheat at (817) 790-6427.

All donors who register to give blood during July and August will receive T-shirt and will automatically enter the Summer Well Done drawings.

Weekly winners will win a $100 gift card to Salt Grass Steakhouse. One grand prize winner will receive a Sonoma 52-inch granite-top island grill. Official rules apply.

Every day this summer, someone in the community will need a blood transfusion for an unexpected accident, a much-needed surgery or regular medical treatment. Blood and blood products constantly must be replenished. Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days and platelets only have five. Therefore, the community must fight a year round battle to avoid shortages.

Some of the world’s leading medical facilities are located in Carter BloodCare’s service area and require large quantities of blood and blood components 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. To maintain an adequate supply throughout the summer, Carter BloodCare must welcome 1,100 donors daily to keep up with the high demand for blood by local hospitals.

Potential donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. Most medications do not effect donor eligibility, even those with well-managed diabetes can be donors.
