The fifth annual St. Joseph Catholic School Oktoberfest was held Saturday, Sept. 22, as an enthusiastic crowd of festival goers packed the Ellis County Expo Center.
Events included a 5K run and a one-mile fun run, game and vendor booths, karaoke contest, washer tournament, a bake off sponsored by Burleson Honey and a silent auction.
“Each class is responsible for projects which are to be auctioned,” said Sister Lucy Sala, a pre-kindergarten teacher at St. Joseph, as she pointed out some of the finished products created by the students.
“My class painted lampshades to be auctioned off and another class decorated a concrete bench with colorful tiles,” Sala said, noting, “It’s wonderful how many people get involved in this. Parents are very generous in donating materials, money and, most of all, their time and it really is what makes our silent auction such a success.”
Other items in the auction were sports baskets and a large display of Dallas Cowboy memorabilia.
North Texas television personality, Scott Sams of Channel 11, was on hand to serve as master of ceremonies, announcing winners of the 5K and 1K runs and also helping to conduct the Oktoberfest ribbon cutting for the event.
“All proceeds will go to St. Joseph Catholic School,” Sala said.
