RED OAK — Red Oak Fire Rescue and Red Oak police were out early this morning assisting a man who was trapped in his vehicle under broken power lines.

Red Oak Fire Rescue Capt. Larry Johnson said the driver was traveling north on State Highway 342 when his vehicle left the road, going through a fence and crashing into a storage building at Hamel’s Red Oak Self Storage.

“He grazed a telephone pole,” Johnson said. “When he hit the telephone pole, that’s what broke the wires.”

The departments received the call at about 5 a.m., but emergency personnel waited about 45 minutes for the electric company to reach the scene and turn off the electricity.

“We were not able to approach the vehicle until the power was turned off,” Johnson said. “We were talking to him the whole time, and he was talking to us.”

The driver was treated for minor injuries and taken to the hospital for evaluation.
