Labor Day Boat Parade

The annual Labor Day Boat Parade will be held on Alvarado Lake at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3. The best viewing is at the public boat ramp.

High school parking spaces for sale

Parking lot spaces will be on sale on Thursday, Aug. 23, in room 311 of the high school. Cost per space is $10 for the school year. Bring drivers license, proof of insurance, car make, model and plate number. Seniors get priority from 9-10.30 a.m. Anyone can purchase a space from 10.30 a.m-2 p.m. Seniors may paint their space for an additional $20.

‘Veterans Reach Out’ seminar

All veterans, family members and friends are invited to attend a Veterans Reach Out seminar, scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at VFW Post 9299, 6732 E. Highway 67, Alvarado.

Helpful personal assistance with questions and claims will be given by experts from Waco VA Regional Office, VA North Texas Health Care System, Texas Veterans Land Board, Veterans Service Organizations and Congressman Chet Edwards' office. Public transportation

Cleburne's transportation service has extended its services to all of Johnson County.

It offers two types of services - daily bus routes with schedules and demand response buses. Daily buses depart Cleburne for downtown Fort Worth three times a day, with stops in Joshua and Burleson.

Cletran operation supervisor Rhonda Tatum said regular runs from Alvarado to Cleburne are $8. Persons older than 60 or younger than 18 years of age can purchase $40 passes for half price.

The service will operate Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until the last pickup time at 5 p.m., Tatum said.

According to a city/county transportation publication, people who are extremely ill, have contagious diseases or are severely injured may not be transported, nor will those intoxicated or violent passengers who pose a threat to the driver or themselves will be allowed to ride, at the driver's discretion. Johnson County Head Start

The Johnson County Head Start is recruiting for 2007-2008. Services include health and social services referrals, individualized education plans and opportunities for socialization and family partnership agreements.

When applying for the program, parents or guardians will need documentation of the child's current physical and dental records, birth certificates and current immunization records. Family must meet income guidelines to qualify and provide proof of income for the past 12 months.

Utility assistance funds available

Funding is available to help low income families in Johnson County with paying utility bills. If you are income eligible and meet all requirements, you may qualify for help with your utility bills. Due to program criteria, application are rated by priority. Therefore, it may not be possible to give immediate attention to applicants holding a notice of termination.

American Legion Adopt-a-Soldier

American Legion Auxiliary 426 is sponsoring an Adopt a Soldier program, benefiting a deployed company in Iraq. Volunteers would commit to send a package once a month to the soldiers until their deployment ends. Packages should include things such as foot powder, baby powder, facial tissues, Desenex/A&D ointment, antibiotic ointment, dental floss, Vicks Vaporub, cotton swabs, lip balm, sunscreen/sunblock, shaving cream, gum, hard candy, crackers, popcorn, books/magazines, 2007 calendars, hygiene packs, air fresheners, unscented baby wipes, anti-perspirant/deodorant, fabric deodorizer, mouthwash, and scented candles. Rental assistance

A Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list for the City of Alvarado opened Oct. 30, 2006. Applications will be accepted Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 104 W. Lillian 4-H Club

The Lillian 4-H Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the United Cooperative Services Community Room at IH-35 and Bethesda Road. 4-H offers a wide variety of activities as well as community service opportunities for youth.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers

Meals on Wheels and the Alvarado Senior Citizens Center are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound seniors in Alvarado. It only takes 30 minutes one day a week to help these seniors in need. These seniors are unable to fix meals for themselves or handicapped and look forward to seeing the volunteer who brings their lunch. Moms in Touch

Moms in Touch International is a group of mothers (grandmothers, aunts, etc.) who meet for one hour each week to pray for their children and the schools they attend. If you are interested in learning more or being part of this praying support group, please call Leigh Garrett at (817) 991-0381.

Alvarado Youth Association Meeting

The Alvarado Youth Association holds its monthly board meeting at 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Everyone is welcome to attend and be a part of the local youth association.
