In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center is bringing the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus to its location for four performances under the big top during the first weekend in October.

The old-fashioned-style circus will feature elephants, lions, tigers, trapeze artists, tightrope walkers, clowns and more from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and from 2-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

“I would like to personally invite the entire city and surrounding areas to attend and join in the celebration,” said Roy Miller, center administrator. “Red Oak has been a wonderful location for our facility. Between our residents, family members, staff and other local businesses we work with, we really know and love this city.

“The circus is going to be such a great way to recognize what Red Oak has been to us over the last five years by hosting this fun-for-everybody performance,” he said. “We also want to give something back to the community to show our appreciation, so proceeds from tickets sales will go to help the North Ellis County Outreach and all the wonderful things they do to help families in the area.”

Discount ticket prices prior to the shows are $8 for adults and $6 for children. Tickets bought at the gate will be $11 for adults and $7 for children. Discount tickets are on sale now at Brookshire’s Grocery Store, Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center and the North Ellis County Outreach office.

“We’re grateful to be the beneficiary of ticket sales from this event,” outreach executive director Denise Butler said. “It just seems like a win-win situation for everyone — from seniors at the nursing home having a memorable, exciting occasion to children and their families experiencing the magic of the circus together and having it benefit those in the area who are in need of help is just a positive thing any way you look at it.”

Local children also have the opportunity to join in the fun in a way as the circus is allowing one lucky person at each of its four shows to serve as a guest ringmaster.

Marketing and admissions director Julie Brown shares Miller’s excitement and invites everyone out on both days.

“We are just so excited to host the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus in honor of our fifth anniversary in Red Oak,” Brown said. “We wanted to find a way to show our appreciation to the community for five great years and we think this will be a special event for everyone can enjoy.”

The public also is invited to attend the tent-raising at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5. This is a free event that will include a tour of the tent after it is raised, a look at all the circus animals that will be on display and a brief bit of circus history.
