DESOTO — The Red Oak Hawks opened their playoff run on Tuesday night with a 69-62 victory over West Mesquite in the bi-district round of the Class 5A Region II playoffs at DeSoto High School.
The Hawks (23-11) advanced to the area round, where they were scheduled to face Sulphur Springs (26-8) at Forney High School on Friday night.
West Mesquite finished with a final record of 13-17.
Midlothian 45, Poteet 31
CEDAR HILL — The Midlothian Panthers opened their Class 5A Region II playoff run on Tuesday night with a victory over Mesquite Poteet in the bi-district round at Cedar Hill High School.
The Panthers (24-9) were next scheduled to face Mount Pleasant (30-3) in the area round at 7 p.m. on Friday at Rockwall High School.
Class 4A Region III: Life 56, Lorena 24
CORSICANA — Life Waxahachie played dominant defense as the Mustangs bounced Lorena out of the postseason on Tuesday night at Navarro College.
The Mustangs (28-9) advanced to face Palestine in an area-round contest on Friday night at Corsicana High School. The winner of this game will face Waco Connally, which beat Fairfield on Thursday night, 58-38.
The Mustangs defeated Lorena for the second time this season, having beaten the Leopards in an early-season tournament game on Nov. 16 by a score of 64-47.
La Vega 54, Heritage 47
CORSICANA — The Heritage Jaguars battled back from a 13-point halftime deficit against Waco La Vega, but the hill was too steep to climb as the Jaguars ended their season with a loss on Tuesday night at Navarro College.
The Jags finish with a 19-14 final record after taking the No. 3 seed out of District 17-4A.
La Vega inched out to a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play, and then took advantage of a cold spell by the Jags, outscoring them 17-7 in the second to go up at the half, 31-18.
HHS fought back in the third to get back to within 42-34 entering the final period, but the Pirates held on for the win.
Heritage graduates six seniors — Gary Reed, Cody Hite, Tyson Wiens, Reggie Adams, Carson Roberts and Jared Cantrell.
Class 3A Region III: Palmer 56, Keene 50
The Palmer Bulldogs pulled an upset Tuesday night, knocking off the Keene Chargers at Waxahachie’s Mike Turner Gymnasium for their first playoff victory since 2011.
The Bulldogs advanced to face Crockett in Friday night’s area-round game at Fairfield High School. Crockett entered the game with a 30-2 record. The winner will face either Maypearl or Little River Academy in the region quarterfinals early next week.
Keene finished with a final mark of 16-12.
Maypearl 44, Rice 38
WACO — Rice cut the margin to five points in the final 21 seconds, but that was as close as it got as the Panthers picked up a playoff victory on Tuesday night at Connally High School.
The Panthers (17-11) were scheduled to play Little River Academy (29-6) on Friday night at Waco’s McLennan Community College in an area-round game. The winner of this game will face the Palmer-Crockett winner early next week in the region quarterfinals.
Maypearl trailed 10-6 after one quarter, but outscored Rice 16-4 in the second frame to take a 12-point halftime lead. The Panthers maintained a nine-point cushion entering the fourth.
Class 2A Region III: Groveton 56, Italy 53, OT
FAIRFIELD — Italy led entering the final period of regulation, but Groveton tied the game at 49-all with a free throw to force overtime and outscored the Gladiators 7-4 in the extra minutes to end their season in the bi-district round on Monday night.
Junior Kort Holley had a game-high 23-points for the Gladiators, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore Julius Williams added 10 points, and fellow sophomore Jayden Saxon scored seven points with a 3-pointer. Cahl Horn, the team’s only senior, went 3-of-6 from the line to finish with three points.
Italy finishes as the district champion and bi-district finalists, guided by first-year head coach Desmond Guy.
