Thursday’s “Let’s Get Warm Giveaway” charity initiative, sponsored by the Local Homeless Coalition in Ellis County, was a major success, organizers said.

More than a 100 people, including volunteers, showed up to the all-day event at First Baptist Church at 450 E. Hwy 287 in Waxahachie.

Free hot meals, snacks, haircuts, clothing, blankets and goody bags with personal care items were allocated to people in need, including those experiencing homelessness. Showers were also available on site.

“It was all very well received,” said Betty Kirkpatrick, chairperson of the Homeless Coalition. “There was very, very little food left.”

Representatives from other local nonprofits and homeless support services, including Daniel’s Den, Waxahachie CARE, Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services and Hope Clinic, were on hand to provide information on available resources.

“There are so many people in Ellis County that are just one paycheck away from being homeless, one problem with the car and then they can’t pay their rent or buy food,” Kirkpatrick explained.

Kirkpatrick said guests were transported to Waxahachie Bible Church where they received additional food and necessities.
