Rachel Elizabeth Head Burton passed on to be with the Lord on November 24, 2019, in her home in Italy, Texas, surrounded by her family and friends.
“Rae” was born April 3, 1933, in Murchison, TX, to Kenneth and Lois Abney Head. Her father passed away when she was three years old. She and her sister, Jackie, spent most of their childhood on their grandparents’ farm.
When she was thirteen, her mother married Olen Archer of Santa Monica, California. Rae was so excited when brother Tim and Stevan were added to their family.
Rae graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1950 and moved to Oak Cliff to begin her working career with Bell Telephone. She married Billy Gene Burton on April 28, 1951. They soon happily filled their home with three children: Gene, Janet and Cindy.
After many years of living in Irving, the family moved to Howard, a community outside of Waxahachie, then later to Italy, TX, where they opened a restaurant that would become the gathering place of the community.
After serving thousands of meals and filling millions of coffee cups, Bill and Rae retired to enjoy golf, their four grandchildren and to devote their time to their daughter Janet. Rae was a shining example of a mother’s love and was an inspiration to all who watched her unwavering devotion to Janet’s well-being.
After 61 years of marriage, Bill passed away in October of 2011. Rae’s parents, sister, Jackie Voirin and brother, Tim Archer also preceded her in death.
Rae’s survivors include her brother Stevan Archer and wife Donna of Independence, California; her children, Gene and Julie Burton of McKinney, Texas, Janet Burton of Italy, Texas and Cindy and Stephen Carter of Italy, Texas. “Nana” will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Ceci and Jesse Hinojosa of Frisco, Texas, Stephanie and Jimmy Brandon, Cristie and Eric Enriquez and Mistie Carter, all of Italy, Texas. She also dearly loved and doted on her great-grandchildren, Liliana, Zoe and Daxton Hinojosa, Tinzley Enriquez and Kylie Saxon.
So many other special friends and family were cherished by Rae, including her extended Burton family, Robin Donaldson, Andy Saxon, Greg Abundis and countless other friends.
Rae demonstrated the finest example of personal sacrifice in the way she selflessly cared for others. She will be remembered for her wit, her patience, her determination and her love for her family. She was a remarkable woman with a beautiful soul, and in her last days, spoke of her excitement of meeting Jesus.
