October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and local hospitals in Ellis County have been holding a number of events to raise awareness.
Baylor Scott and White Health Waxahachie held a Breast Health Awareness Symposium on Sept. 23 to raise awareness of not only breast care, but also the latest in detection and treatment.
Also BS&W Waxahachie had an Oct. 1 kick off in the hospital lobby to raise awareness and provided education on why mammograms are important.
Denell Flores, BS&W breast nurse navigator, said the Waxahachie facility has two 3-D imaging rooms, one 2-D and breast ultrasound. “We also do both 3-D and ultrasound guided biopsies when needed,” she said.
Dr. Valerie Gorman, the Breast Specialist at BS&W Waxahachie, also maintains an informative website at www.texasbreastcenter.com .
The BS&W Waxahachie Breast Cancer Support Group meets the fourth Tuesday of every month from 5-6:30 p.m. It is open to all breast cancer patients and survivors regardless of where care was provided.
Touchstone Medical Imaging in Red Oak is also involved in the community. Touchstone offers 3D and 2D mammography and has recently sponsored the Red Oak High School basketball teams, promoting its women’s imaging services.
Touchstone, which has locations throughout North Texas, this year marked the 20th anniversary of the Celebrating Women luncheon. This event brings together more than 1,300 supporters to increase awareness and generate funding for breast cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Touchstone said this year its team collectively raised and donated close to $40,000.
In a Facebook post, Touchstone reminded patients that insurance covers a yearly free screening and that screenings are on a walk-in basis.
Likewise, Ennis Regional Medical Center promotes its digital mammography program. Ennis Regional Medical Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology.
ERMC accepts self referrals; a patient does not need a physician's order for a mammogram.
ERMC offers extended hours on Tuesday and Thursday for patients' convenience.
