Patricia “Pat” Ann Haas Duke, age 76, left this earth to be with her Heavenly Father and Savior on Sunday, the 26th of May 2019, surrounded by her family and friends. Pat was born the 17th of June 1942 to Stephen Reme Haas and Alice Borne Haas.

Pat was born in Vacherie, Louisiana a small, Cajun French community along the river road of the Mississippi River. In 1960 she graduated from St. James High School. Pat, called “Sweet” since she was a child, had fond memories of growing up around her many uncles, aunts and cousins. She later moved and worked in New Orleans.

In 1963, she married Philip B. Smith, Jr and moved to Houston, Texas where she began her family. She had three children, Phil, Steve, and Renee’. The family later moved to Waxahachie, Texas where she called home until her death.

Pat often commented that she was born on this earth to be a mom. She was a wonderful homemaker. She spent many long nights making holiday costumes, working on school projects and preparations to host activities for her children. The highlight of her day was often the “As the Bell Rings” chats with her children when they returned home from school. Known to be a wonderful cook, her specialty was her gumbos. She could make a perfect roux and whether it was chicken and sausage, or seafood, it was a feast to be enjoyed.

Pat was a gracious, classy, and kind lady. Pat loved to learn and was passionate about reading. Her library was full of books from religion, politics to philosophy and history. Pat loved artwork and was co-owner of The Rogers Street Art Gallery in downtown Waxahachie for several years. Pat loved to spend time with others talking over coffee. She was always open to hearing others opinions or having a friendly debate. She always treated others opinions with respect, insightfulness and intrigue.

Pat loved and knew the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was spiritual in a way that made you want to learn more. Without even knowing it, you would have had a spiritual conversation and come away blessed.
