A family-friendly tale of loss and restoration will warm the hearts of Theatre Rocks! audiences starting April 26, with the opening of “A Little Princess.” Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved story has been magically adapted for the stage by John Vreeke.

In this classic story by the author of "The Secret Garden," young Sara Crewe (played by Julia Hauffe of Waxahachie) is left at a girls’ school in Victorian London because her military father must return to India. Captain Crewe is played by Julia’s own father, Jason Hauffe.

Sara soon learns that the school’s headmistress Maria Minchin (Kelly Kovar of Ennis) is not kind, especially when Sara’s fortunes change. Sara is tormented by a couple of the schoolgirls, Lavinia (Madeleine Koelzer of Waxahachie) and Jessie (Jojo Simmons of Waxahachie). Regardless of some harsh circumstances, Sara is able to form special friendships with Ermengarde (Annie Jane Adams of Ennis), little Lottie (Annemarie Simmons of Waxahachie), and scullery maid Becky (Jacquelyn Bailey of Waxahachie).

Original music and choreography enhance the Theatre Rocks! production, which features a multigenerational cast of 30 and includes actors of a wide variety of ages from across Ellis County.

The stage play takes a touching look at what it means to truly behave nobly, regardless of circumstance—through poverty and wealth. In that spirit, Theatre Rocks! is sponsoring a food drive and encouraging all theatergoers to bring a couple of canned food items to help others in need in the community.

Theatre Rocks! is located at 505 NW Main St. in Ennis. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 26 and 27, May 3, 4, 10, and 11 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, and Saturday, May 11.
