Gatesville proved more than capable, but the Venus Lady Bulldogs stayed clean in the field for a 4A bi-district championship win Friday evening.

The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on four Gatesville errors and collected six hits along the way for the 4-2 win.

Kaylee Davis struck out nine Gatesville batters in the win and allowed two earned runs on four hits. She did not issue a walk but did hit four batters.

Gatesville scored both runs on singles after each base runner was hit by a pitch to reach base.

Paige Loewen recorded the lone extra-base hit for the Lady Bulldogs. Her sixth-inning double put runners on second and third and led to two Venus runs in the inning.

Venus also scored one run in the second and fourth innings.

Loewen drove in two runs, while Piper Lanford and Maria Rodriguez plated one run, each.

Venus has now won 10 consecutive ball games, dating back to a non-district loss to Mildred (11-5) on March 11.

Friday's win was the first game for the Lady Bulldogs in a week and a half, too. Venus last played April 16, defeating Alvarado on a walk-off error in the bottom of the eighth inning, 3-2, to finish undefeated in District 17-4A.

The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the regional quarterfinals and won 20 games in 2018 before losing to Graham. The win Friday was the 22nd for Venus this season.

Venus faces Carthage in a three-game series in the 4A Region III area championship.

Game one is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, while Game two is slated for 6 p.m. Friday and game three will be 30 minutes after game two, if necessary.

All three games will be at Grand Saline High School.
