Two Waxahachie High School teams have advanced to the FFA State Leadership Development Event Contests on Friday.
A total of six teams competed in the area contest on Nov. 17 and concluded with the greenhand skills demonstration team and the senior chapter conducting team both placing in the top-two as state qualifiers.
At the area leadership contest, the top two teams from the five FFA districts in the area, competed in each event for a spot in the top two placements, to advance to the state contest.
The greenhand skills team consists of three freshmen Bryce Martin, James Sims and Cheyan Underwood. The youthful team has practiced a demonstration and script to explain how to fuse polyethylene pipe.
WHS agriculture teacher and FFA advisor Brooks Humphrey explained the team was timid at first but was inspired by their recognition throughout the contests.
“It’s kind of crazy to see them progress from the first day of class to this point,” Humphrey said. “Whenever you see those kids that have potential to do well in a speaking contest, they aren’t even aware of what’s going to happen and […] aren’t aware of their abilities to do it.”
The senior chapter conducting team, which comprised of Corinne Auvenshine, Tyler Buchanan, Thomas Carlile, Meredith Fay, Kyan Frisbee, Landon Jones, Baylie Paris, Kayla Stockman, Brooke Trull and Alex Mendez, also placed first.
"I have seen these kids grow and face many challenges throughout the year," said Jeanette Middleton, WHS agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. "They are amazing students that realize that we are going to face teams that may or may not be more talented than ours. In the end, they also know that there isn’t another team that will work harder at achieving their goals."
Other WHS FFA teams that competed in the area contest included:
Senior skills demonstration – fourth-place team members: Landon Davis, Kayla Milholen, Matthew Molengraaf.
Agriculture advocacy – fourth-place team members: Landry Bosher, Kaitlyn Linsenbardt, Abigail Morton, Madison Teel, Lea Ward.
Greenhand chapter conducting – fifth-place team members: Alexandra Anguiano, Abigail Buchanan, Ryan DeLeon, Lillie Loose, Case Lucky, Jonathan Middleton, Macie Morton, Katlyn Smith, Payton Acker, Wesley Smith, Grace Boozer.
Students who qualified for the State FFA LDE Contests will travel to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, on Nov. 30 to test their skills against the top competitors from across the state.
