Lynda Rae Fulghum, 79, of Waxahachie passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Pleasant Manor Health and Rehab. She was born June 2, 1939, in San Angelo, Texas to Raymond D. and Ida York. She was an only child. Her parents had moved to San Angelo in 1929 where Lynda grew up and graduated from San Angelo High School. She was a good student and played on the school tennis team. She was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol Cadets as a teenager. Her father was the owner of a machine shop where Lynda worked part-time during her school year and became quite accomplished at running the machine tools.
After high school, Lynda enrolled at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Her future husband Donald P. Fulghum enrolled in the university at the same time. Her coursework was for an Engineering Degree which was unusual for a woman. She was the only woman engineering student enrolled in the university at that time. She married Donald in 1958 and they both entered the work/study program that allowed them to work at White Sands Missile Range for 6 months and take classes for 6 months each year.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1962 the family moved to Dallas and worked at LTV Aerospace. New hires for LTV were listed by initials only and the last name. As a result, LTV was confused to have a woman appear for work. At that time only one in a thousand Electrical Engineer graduates were women. However, Lynda was accepted and successfully performed design tasks on a series of new aircraft developments while working at LTV.
Lynda and Donald had three children, Evangeline “Angie”, Donald A. and Paul. Her last child, Paul, was born in February 1965 and Lynda then decided to leave the workforce for a few years until the children were in school. After Lynda returned to the workforce, she changed her focus from hardware design to software and then worked 10 years for a Dallas company called Teledyne-Geotech. This work was performed on the Tenneco Gas/Oil pipeline control system. In 1982 she went independent and worked directly with Tenneco as a subcontractor until she retired in 1995.
Lynda and Don took up skiing during the 1980’s and 1990’s. They skied in Colorado but mainly northern New Mexico. Lynda had heart problems that resulted in her having to have a pacemaker installed in 1993. However, she didn’t slow down. She and Don continued to ski. In addition, Lynda and Don bought a travel trailer and visited many U. S. states, Alaska and Canada. They also flew to visit a number of foreign countries.
Daughter, Angie, was married in 1993 and produced two grandchildren, Evan and Lily, born in 1996 and 2002 respectively. Lynda loved her grandchildren and was quite close to them. In 2000 Lynda and Don moved to Waxahachie from Poetry, Texas to be closer to the grandchildren. They became involved with social activities, especially the Senior Center in Waxahachie for many years after that.
On her last trip out of the Dallas area, Lynda attended grandson Evan’s graduation from Texas Tech in Lubbock in May of 2017. Unfortunately, Lynda’s health began to rapidly deteriorate in mid-2017 and eventually resulted in the necessity of placing her in a nursing home for close medical care in 2018.
Lynda Rae Fulghum is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald P. Fulghum of Waxahachie; her children and their families, daughter Evangeline Downard of Waxahachie; son Donald A. Fulghum and wife Cindy of Kansas City, Missouri and son Paul Fulghum of Olalla, Washington; two grandchildren, Even Downard of Lubbock and Lily Downard of Waxahachie.
