A Waxahachie resident lost her life in a single-vehicle accident on Sunday. Beverly Collins, 49, was struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of S. Interstate Highway-35E while she walked down the roadway after the car she was in ran out of gas, stated Red Oak Police PIO Lt. Marc Schroeder.

Schroeder noted dispatchers received several calls at 9:24 p.m. in regards to a person walking down the middle of the left southbound lane of the highway.

“At 9:31 p.m. dispatchers received another call advising that the female subject had been struck by a vehicle at the same location. Red Oak Fire personnel and AMR ambulance personnel were dispatched to the scene,” Schroeder said. “Red Oak Police personnel arrived on the scene and started an investigation into a collision that occurred that resulted in the death of the pedestrian.”

Schroeder stated Collins was a passenger in a vehicle that ran out of gas and pulled onto the inside shoulder. The driver walked to a nearby gas station and left Collins and another passenger in the vehicle.

Collins left the vehicle shortly after for unknown reasons. A car struck Collins after she entered the lane of traffic. She later succumbed to her injuries.

Precinct One Justice of the Peace Joyce Lindauer pronounced Collins deceased at the scene. The accident remains under investigation at this time by the Red Oak Police Department.
