Richard (Dick) Robert Allen, beloved husband and father, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 22, 2018. He was born February 9, 1930 in Hagerman, New Mexico to Ora Ethel Deason Allen and Sidney Thomas Allen. He was the youngest of nine children. His father preceded him in death in June 1945 when Dick was just 15 years old. He graduated Valedictorian of his class at Hagerman High School and his athletic prowess earned him a basketball scholarship to Texas Christian University. He was the first of his siblings to attend college. Dick played on three straight Southwest Conference Championship basketball teams while at T.C.U. In his senior year he was the captain of the team and earned the Sumner Award for most valuable player. While at T.C.U. he met the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Virginia Ann Miracle Allen. They married on August 23, 1952. Dick graduated from T.C.U. in 1953 with a BBA. He went on to earn two more degrees, M.Ed. at Texas Wesleyan College and Ed.D. from Nova University.
He began his career in education at Midlothian High School (Texas) teaching math and bookkeeping and coaching basketball. He coached the 1957-58 Midlothian Panthers to District and Bi-District championships. He then began his thirty years in the Dallas Independent School District coaching at Spence Junior High and J.F. Kimball High School. He was then appointed principal and worked at many Dallas schools, Letot Elementary, Rosemont Elementary, Rylie Intermediate, and Comstock Middle School. He retired in 1989, moved to the family farm in 1992 where he worked cattle, mowed pastures, walked two miles a day, and was always ready for a good conversation at the kitchen table over a glass of iced tea or to play a round of golf with a friend.
Dick was an active member at Faith Bible Church, serving on the elder board for many years and leading small group ministry. He was a respected leader in the church for his character, wisdom, integrity, and faith. He also served on the board of Don Anderson Ministries for thirty years. He was loved for his wit, sense of humor, and sense of fun. Faith and family were the most important things to him. Galatians 6:10, one of his favorite verses, describes how he lived his life. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Ann Miracle Allen, his three children and their spouses which he loved like his own children, Paul Richard Allen and his wife Lisa, Mary Suzanne Allen Zadwick and her husband Joe, Adrienne Lee Allen Smith and her husband Robert (Bob) Jr., four grandchildren, Jordan Zadwick, Joanna Zadwick Welk, Paxton Smith, LeeAnna Smith Swartz and four great-grandchildren (with one on the way).
