The members of Kappa Delta Pi of Southwestern Assemblies of God University held their first campuswide event to deliver supplies to a school in the Houston community following the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Rachel Ray, KDP President and Houston native, said, “It was just great to be able to see the school come together to help somebody that they didn’t know.”

KDP is an honor society for education majors. The organization brings people in from the school systems to offer advice and tips on teaching to prepare college students for a career in the education field.

Ray stated that the idea for the drive was initiated when she and Mary Frances, fundraising chair, brainstormed different ways to provide aid to schools affected by Harvey.

KDP reached out to teachers in Houston and was able to find and partner with a teacher who is also a SAGU alumna.

“We started talking with her and her principal and she was all for it. So it was really great, we set up the posters and got the boxes,” Ray added.

From there, students filled up boxes with supplies to send to Houston. After the drive was over, KDP received thank-you cards from the classroom they had adopted.

Along with the recipients of the supplies, Ray explained how impactful the experience was for KDP members after seeing how SAGU students rallied together to provide help.

“The whole school will support you if you come up with a way that will help the community,” she said.

Ray, who will be a senior on the SAGU Lady Lions softball team this fall, has a few goals in mind for the organization.

“I really want us to get more known because a lot of people don’t know what we are,” she explained. Ray would also like KDP to get connected to the local schools and be a support system for first-year teachers.

Ray expressed her appreciation for organizations like KDP on SAGU’s campus. KDP members are able to glean from the knowledge and insight from professionals in their field while also gaining valuable experience both academically and spiritually.

Along with the supply drive, KDP held several other events to prepare future educators, such as putting on mock interviews with Waxahachie ISD staff, learning to create resumes, and holding a panel of first-year teachers and student teachers to talk about their experience.
