To the Editor,

I am pleased to write this letter in support of Shani Flemins. Shani was our attorney who helped us navigate the legal process of adopting our oldest son. We came to her when the biological mother was six months pregnant. We knew virtually nothing of what it took to adopt a child. Shani was with us every step of the way. Her positive and friendly attitude put us at ease immediately. No question was too small or went unanswered. We left our first meeting with her completely at ease that she had everything on her end under control. A few months later, the adoption was finalized without event. But the story doesn’t end there. When our son was two years old, we were contacted by women who claimed that her husband was the biological father. Probably every adoptive parents worst nightmare is to have someone claiming rights to your child. We immediately picked up the phone and called Shani. This was a Saturday afternoon and she made herself available to us. She assured us in her calm and reassuring way that these women had no legal grounds and to not respond in any way. That was seven years ago. Our miracle boy is nine years old and has two little brothers. Shani played a huge role in making our dream of a family a possibility. When I think back to that time and the impact that Shani had, the words that resound with me are capable, positive and caring. All of this is mixed with a great sense of humor! All of these traits will serve her well as judicial district court judge.
