The Red Oak Lady Hawk basketball team can remove the monkey from their backs. The girls are winless in District 10-5A no more after defeating Lancaster on the road Friday night, 43-39.

Behind Lauren Lafitte's eight first-quarter points, the Lady Hawks build a 12-8 lead in the first frame and never looked back. Red Oak led 18-14 at the half and 35-23 after three quarters.

“I really think that it is a process and I saw them take the next step of that process tonight,” Red Oak head girls basketball coach Darren Eubanks said. “It is happening about the time it is supposed to, so that is good.”

He added that he hopes the Lady Hawks will learn to battle through adversity moving forward.

“This is the toughest district in the state of Texas,” Eubanks said. “Just to be able to be in the game, keep it close and fight, I just want us to fight every game.”

Aniyah Johnson led the team with 11 points, while Lafitte finished with eight. Danielle Sauls, Ariel Warren, Mays, and Aliyah Harden all scored five points, respectively.

Eubanks pointed to the all-around play by Johnson on the glass as well as the scoring column as the biggest game changer on Friday.

“Some of those things won’t show up in the box score, but she played well for a freshman,” he added.
