A torrid pace on offense in the first half catapulted Red Oak to its first district victory on the basketball court this season Tuesday night on the road against Mansfield Lake Ridge.

The Hawks put up 19 first-quarter points and 21 more in the second quarter to build a 10-point halftime lead over the Eagles. They then closed out the fourth quarter 9-of-14 from the charity stripe to seal the win, 65-57.

The lone district win for the Hawks last season came in their final contest of 2016-17 against Mansfield Legacy, 72-65.

“It was a gritty game," Red Oak head boys' basketball coach Jason Sasser said. "Lake Ridge, they just kept coming. We would go out to a 10-plus point lead and they would fight back. I am proud of our guys. We were able to finish the game.”

The second-year head coach added, “I am going to enjoy this win.”

Marcus Sasser led the Hawks with 23 points, while Keymond Taylor added 14 and Howard Turner finished with nine.

Andrew Yuhanna and Rogers chipped in six points. Emerson Wallace and Jonathan Chapa added two points, respectively.

Joy Madimba led the Eagles with 13 points, while Tahlik Chavez and Carneal Chambliss both scored 12.

Red Oak, now 14-7 on the year and 1-2 in District 10-5A, hosts Mansfield Summit on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.
