ENNIS — The Ellis County Marine Corps League Detachment 1452 celebrated the 242nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps in the Champions Club at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis on Nov. 10.

The event was the first birthday ball for the Detachment since it chartered in June.

In attendance were Ellis County Judge Carol Bush and several Ellis County Commissioners. Also attending as the guest of honor was the State Rep. John Wray and his wife, Michelle.

In a very thoughtful speech to the audience, Wray spoke about the history of the Corps and all it means to the security of our nation. The oldest Marine, Rev. Jerry Hill, Waxahachie, 80, was recognized, as well as the youngest Marine, Private First Class Mark Vasquez, Ennis, 20, currently serving in the Marine Corps reserves.

They received the first slice of birthday cake served by the Commandant of the Detachment Robert Bell.

Several other awards were presented, one of which went to the Texas Motorplex for providing the venue and dinner. The Red Oak High School Jr. ROTC performed as the color guard for the ceremony.

Over 130 people — including Marines, League members, along with many civilians from throughout the County — enjoyed an evening of celebration. The League hopes this event will be the first of many birthday balls to be held in Ellis County every November 10th.
