WAXAHACHIE — A 17-year-old male is dead from an apparent gunshot wound just a few blocks from an elementary school in Waxahachie.
Waxahachie Police officers were dispatched at 9:21 p.m. on Tuesday to a residence in the 200 block of Cambridge St., roughly four blocks north of Shackelford Elementary in Waxahachie, to the report of an unresponsive person.
Police are investigating the death of Gabriel Richie, 17, as a homicide.
“Officers arrived to find a deceased male inside the house. He has been identified as Gabriel Richie, 17, of Waxahachie. It appears that he suffered a gunshot wound,” Waxahachie Police Lt. Todd Woodruff said. “A neighbor approached officers and reported hearing what sounded like a firecracker at about 6:10 p.m. The neighbor then observed the victim get out of a dark-colored car and run inside his home.”
Woodruff stated that the car — described as a dark-colored Taurus or Altima — drove away from the victim’s home.
Detectives believe Richie collapsed once he got inside the house. He was found by an acquaintance who was asked to go check on him around 9:20 p.m. after Richie’s mother had grown concerned when she could not reach him.
Ellis County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Jackie Miller Jr was called out to the residence and pronounced Richie dead at 10:54 p.m. Miller ordered the body taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office for a full autopsy.
Woodruff stated that detectives worked through the night interviewing friends and acquaintances of Richie. Richie and his mother lived in Red Oak before recently moving to Waxahachie.
