Mary Larue Work Petruska passed away peacefully of natural causes on Thursday, October 5, 2017. Mary was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on August 3, 1932, the second daughter of Milburn and Elizabeth McCauley Work. Mary grew up in Ohio, graduating from Liberty High School in 1950 and Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 as an R.N.

Mary lived in Panama for a few years, where her husband, Jack, was in the Army. They then settled in Irving, Texas, where Mary resided most of her life. In 2012, she moved to Ovilla, Texas to be closer to her family.

Mary worked as an R.N. at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Ohio, then for a pediatrician in Irving. For the remainder of her career, she worked as a research nurse at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas and conducted studies for UT Southwestern Medical School, retiring in 1997.

Mary always supported her five children in school and outside activities. Even though she worked full-time, she attended most of her children's sporting events and dance recitals. She greatly enjoyed raising her children and then especially loved and enjoyed being with her 11 grandchildren.

Later in life, Mary also worked as a real estate agent and a travel agent and enjoyed playing bingo and traveling.

Mary and her family were charter members of Holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church in Irving, and after moving to Ovilla, she attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waxahachie, TX.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother James Work, sister Jacquelyn Work Millette, and brother Thomas Work.

Mary is survived by her sister, Sharon Spoerl and husband, Lenny, of Summerville, SC; and by her five children and eleven grandchildren: John R. Petruska, Jr. and wife, Karen, of West Columbia, TX and children, Carrie and husband, Kyle Goodman, and Rich Petruska; Jane Crawford and husband, Kirk, of Ovilla,TX and children, Elizabeth Crawford and husband, Jeff Burkholder, and Emily Reichert and husband, David; Laura Mendel and husband, John, of Crawford, TX and children, Sarah, Jennifer, and Thomas; Mary Beth Petruska and husband, Mark Mitchell, of Bainbridge Island, WA, and children Blake, Andie, and Zoe; and Philip Petruska and wife, Michelle Bridges, of Norfolk, VA and son Nicholas.

A visitation and rosary will be held from 6 - 8 pm on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Wayne Boze Funeral Home, 1826 W. Hwy 287 Business, Waxahachie, TX 75165.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Waxahachie, TX on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
