WAXAHACHIE — With the school year quickly approaching, Waxahachie ISD once again partnered with community volunteers, businesses and churches to provide students with the essentials needed before the first bell rings.

In total, about 1,500 students will benefit from the work of some 30 churches and businesses, said WISD Director of Public Relations Jenny Bridges. From Altus Emergency providing notebook paper and hair stylists to Citizens National Bank and Townsquare Title backing new backpacks, students and their parents were able to secure those much-needed school-supply items during the annual "Operation: Back to School" held Saturday, Aug. 5 at Clift Elementary.

"We are so grateful to the community and district employees who came together to volunteer and donate for this event," Bridges said. "We know our kids are more successful when they have the tools they need to do well in school."

In addition to backpacks, fresh haircuts and paper, businesses like Owens Corning donated pencil boxes and Americase supplied spiral notebooks. There was also a chance for students to receive free immunizations from North Texas Flu Shots, among other opportunities.

The first day of the 2017-18 school year is Monday, Aug. 21 for all campuses.
