RED OAK — With the start of volleyball season just over a month away, a pair of Red Oak Lady Hawks will enter match one against Highland Park with a little boost of confidence after receiving statewide recognitions.
The Texas Association of Volleyball Coaches recently announced the 2017 TAVC All-Texas teams and watch lists, and seniors Emily North and Serena Patterson both received a nod. The list was announced in late May.
The two ended last season with all-district accolades after the team fell to No. 2 Waxahachie in the UIL 5A Region II Quarterfinals — just one year removed from missing the playoffs altogether in back-to-back seasons.
North, who head coach Hope Porter noted was the best all-around player on the court for the Lady Hawks following the 2016 season, was named to the TAVC All-Texas 5-6A watch list as a setter. As the only player to regularly play from all six spots on the court a season ago, North accounted for 578 assists, 264 digs and 250 kills.
One way or another, the Lady Hawks will have to fill the void at the setter position left by Kayla Brock, who graduated in May after leading the team with 815 assists.
Listed by TAVC as an outside hitter, Patterson also received a nod to the 2017 TAVC All-Texas 5-6A watch list.
During last year’s turnaround season, Patterson led District 10-5A with 268 blocks, as well as the Lady Hawks with 395 kills.
Red Oak opens the 2017 season Aug. 8 on the road against Highland Park before returning for the home opener Aug. 14 against Grapevine. Both matches are slated for 6:30 p.m. starts.
