WAXAHACHIE — Southwestern Assemblies of God University will launch a new Associate of Arts in its Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages department Fall 2017.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) encompasses what used to be called Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL ) and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). It is an international association of professionals advancing the quality of English language teaching through professional development, research, standards and advocacy.
SAGU’s TESOL associates of arts will prepare students to teach communicative English language in a variety of foreign and domestic contexts for a broad range of student populations. This program will also apply TESOL methods for cross-cultural and missiological applications.
Calvin George, English Instructor and the TESOL Program Coordinator said, “English teachers are sought all around the world. The demand for English teachers exists virtually everywhere creating an open door into any state, country, culture and people group. Thus, the primary importance of TESOL is its ability to meet the needs of people around the world - linguistically and spiritually."
SAGU currently offers TESOL education through the TESOL Track of the English bachelor's of arts, TESOL minor and TESOL certification. However, with the addition of the Associate's of Arts in TESOL, students can present an official document resulting in increased marketability to future employers.
Students seeking the TESOL minor or TESOL track already take these courses, and students pursuing the TESOL certification are only one course away from these requirements. For these students, transitioning to an Associate's of Arts in TESOL can prove to be a suitable process with many benefits.
George believes that the degree will provide more teaching opportunities for our graduates overseas.
"It has already been wonderful seeing students graduate and teach in Asia, South America, Africa and Europe," he said. "My heart for fulfilling the Great Commission through English teaching is excited to see the further impact our graduates can have on advancing the Kingdom of God through TESOL."
