WAXAHACHIE — An Ellis County Grand Jury recently indicted Ennis resident Shane Edward Burkes, 45, on the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The indictment was issued March 8 and deputies arrested Burkes on Dec. 16, 2016.

According to the indictment, Burkes allegedly threaten and caused bodily injury the victim by ramming her vehicle with his vehicle causing it to crash. The indictment also states that Burkes, on Sept. 28, 1995, was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old in Criminal District Court No. 2 of Dallas County.

Deputies were initially dispatched to the area of Walker Creek Road and Farm-to-Market 85 in response to a two-car accident that involved a disturbance at about 8:23 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2016.

“Upon arrival, deputies were directed by an Ennis Police Officer already on scene to a 27-year-old female complainant. The complainant told Deputies that she had been traveling on Farm-to-Market Road 85 when the second vehicle began driving behind her at a very close distance,” stated JoAnn Livingston, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, in a release. “She said the other vehicle then got in front of her, slamming on its brakes before getting back behind her. She said the other vehicle then rammed her car, causing both vehicles to wreck out.”

Livingston said deputies also spoke with a witness and then the driver of the other vehicle, identified as Burkes. Burkes was subsequently taken into custody at the scene. According to online records from the Wayne McCollum Detention Center Burkes was booked into the detention center on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon at 7:18 a.m. on Dec. 17, 2016. Burkes remains in custody at the detention center as of Noon Wednesday with a bond of $250,000.

According to online records from the Ellis County District Clerk’s Office, Burkes court appointed attorney is Danny Freisner. His arraignment is set for 9 a.m. on May 2 in the 443rd Judicial District Court.
