WAXAHACHIE — Each day, Meals on Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties provides more than 700 homebound residents with a healthy nutritious meal.
This year, the Waxahachie Downtown Merchants Association has decided to partner with Meals on Wheels to help raise funds by selling postcards as part of Meals on Wheels annual "March for Meals" campaign.
“The WDMA has decided to sponsor Meals on Wheels with our 'Ladies Night Out' in March. That is going to be March 9 from 5-8 p.m. in downtown. All of the shops are open and we all have specials, some sort of snack and some sort of sip. Some of the stores are doing a percentage to Meals on Wheels,” WDMA President Amber Caverly said. “We are also offering the $1 'March for Meals' donation cards. It is a donation of $1, and it supports March for Meals efforts to help local seniors to remain independent and healthy in their own homes. So 100 percent of those proceeds go back to Meals on Wheels.”
Caverly said people who wish to support Meals on Wheels through the purchase of a card can ask for them when they check out at participating merchants. Once a customer buys a card, it will be signed with their name and placed in the store's window. Postcards are already available for purchase at participating downtown businesses.
Caverly added that Meals on Wheels is a vital community program because it supports people are homebound that can’t go to a grocery store or go out to have a meal prepared.
According to the Meals on Wheels website, March for Meals is a national campaign to raise awareness about senior issues like isolation, hunger, and loss of independence.
“Throughout the month of March, hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs mobilize across the country to reach out to their communities and build the support that will enable them to serve America's seniors all year long,” the Meals on Wheels website states. “During Community Champions Week, elected officials and community champions delivered meals to elderly neighbors in their communities to help build awareness to these efforts. Meals on Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties is fortunate to have a strong support from both counties and rely on this fundraising event to help fund our organization.”
Paige Harris, who is the Director of Donor Relations for Meals on Wheels for Johnson and Ellis Counties, said very appreciative of the support from the downtown business community.
“It is very encouraging. We get a lot of support from the Waxahachie community as far as volunteers, donors, the businesses and the churches. We are very, very fortunate. This is just one more way to let the community know that we are there to serve,” Harris said. “If you of anyone that needs our services we are here for you. I think that we are going to be able to reach a whole different audience that we have been able to reach with this event.”
Harris said this the 14th year for March for Meals to be recognized nationally.
“There are approximately 5,000 meals on wheels programs in the nation. People don’t usually realize that there is so many. It’s just a month that we can concentrate on our homebound neighbors and let the community know that they are there and need to be served,” Harris said. “I think the neat thing about it because it is nationwide it really gives us a lot of awareness and publicity that we don’t get other times of the year.”
