WAXAHACHIE — To fulfill unanswered questions and provide Waxahachie ISD parents with necessary information and knowledge about drugs that students may encounter, IMPACT Waxahachie will host a presentation at Waxahachie High School Thursday, Jan. 26. The presentation “Drugs Here?! Do You Know?!” will take place at the little theater from 6—8 p.m.
The awareness session is in conjunction with National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week, which runs January 23—29. According to IMPACT, the organizations are "collaborating with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to help shatter the myths about substance abuse by kids."
According to the IMPACT Waxahachie press release, “Most parents would say (with confidence) that their child would never do drugs, and many would be correct, but on the other hand, there will be some that will be dismayed to find out that their child has used drugs. This is a perfect opportunity for parents to be in the 'know,' and have the information needed to talk to their kids about the dangers of drugs. Parents should talk to their kids about the dangers of drugs often, and begin at an early age. Studies are showing early onset of drug use begins around age 11.”
Community partners of IMPACT and presenters include DPS Trooper Craig Henrywill and Donna Knight from Red Oak Project Success. IMPACT communities will provide a ‘Mock Bedroom: Hide-N-Seek’ presentation which shows parents where students may hide their substance in plain sight.
The press release shared that Henrywill and Knight will present “[...] the “Signs & Symptoms” of drug use and abuse, which will allow parents to come away with a better understanding of how to recognize if their youth is experimenting or abusing drugs.
Along with these presentations, North Texas Poison Control will have an information table. Handouts from IMPACT regarding the cause and effects and facts on various substances will be available, as well as ways to begin a conversation about drugs with their kids.
