PALMER – A heat lamp is what sparked a fire in a storage building on Sunday that caused first responders to find heavy smoke coming from a structure when they arrived on scene at about 3 p.m. The building is located in the 500 block of Green Acres Dr.

“The structure was pretty damaged on the inside. We stopped it pretty quick. We believe that a heat lamp in there burned through the floor and set the shed on fire,” Palmer Assistant Fire Chief Ricky McElhaney said. “It is a barn style storage shed and was not a metal building. It was made out of wood. He had a motorcycle in there and a whole lot of his other equipment in there. Most of that was damaged.”

McElhaney said he believes the two story storage building is a total loss. The building was constructed out of wood, which sustained significant charring from the fire.

Ellis County Fire Marshal Tim Birdwell investigated the cause of the fire. Fire crews were on scene for about an hour before clearing the scene and returning to the station.
