Lola May Ballard was born to Thomas and Minnie Smithwick on June 2, 1923 in Sterrett, Texas along with her twin sister Lois. They were always known as Happy and Jack. Lola had an older sister Hazel Jean and younger brother Thomas Jr and Betty Jo was her younger sister. Lola attended school in Sterrett and when she was almost 18 years old Lola and Lois applied for jobs with Boeing Aircraft in Seattle Washington where they were "Rosie Riveters" working on the aircraft heading for Japan. After the war ended Lola moved back to Texas and worked at the Majestic Theatre and Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas. Then Lola reconnected with a childhood friend Carl Ballard from Bee Creek, a small community in Ellis County. Carl had served in WWII as a medic in the Navy. They met by chance at the Pendley cafe in Forreston, Texas and love struck them and they were married in 1949. They were together 60 years and together they had four children, Fred Travis in 1952, Allen Ray in 1953, Catherine Sue in 1956, and Lora Lea in 1962.

Lola had a wonderful life, she owned a dress shop, was our "Movie Star" appearing as an extra in Places in the Heart and Return to Peyton Place. She was a Prayer Warrior, and a member of the Forreston Baptist Church for over 65 years.
