WAXAHACHIE — Debra and Wil Wakeland, widow and son of Joe Wakeland, were presented with a $5,000 check in honor of the Joe Wakeland Memorial Fund on behalf of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
The money will go towards a scholarship or multiple scholarships at the end of the school year to either a softball player or men’s basketball player, or both. The athlete must be in need of financial assistance.
“When there is a need, we want to be notified,” Debra Wakeland said.
The Chamber of Commerce set up the fund at Interbank in Waxahachie where donations are still being accepted. Portions of the money in the check was raised at the 2016 Gingerbread Classic Golf Tournament, which took place on June 3.
“It’s a very good thing that they’re doing this scholarship. My dad was really into higher education, and he would think it’s cool that something in his name is helping others go to college that might not have had the chance or the money to go,” Wil Wakeland said. “This scholarship will help them and be the little bit they need to get them there. My mom and I both think it is a great thing."
