Joe Wakeland, veteran Waxahachie ISD teacher and coach, passed away Thursday.

Coach Wakeland taught in WISD for nearly 20 years, starting his career with the district in 1997 at what is now the Challenge Academy.

“Coach Wakeland had a big heart for kids of all ages and was loved by students, players, and coaches,” said Greg Reed, the WISD Athletic Director. “The hallways, courts and ball fields of Waxahachie will forever be filled with us talking about the memories of and fun times with our friend and coach, but no one will be able to tell those stories with the same enthusiasm and expression as Joe Wakeland.”

Coach Wakeland went on to teach at two junior high campuses, and coached many junior high and high school teams throughout his career. At the time of his death, he was an assistant basketball and assistant softball coach for Waxahachie High School.

“Joe Wakeland had a huge impact on not only Waxahachie ISD, but our community as a whole,” said Jeremy Glenn, WISD's Superintendent. “Waxahachie students will miss his encouragement and leadership both in the classroom and on the playing field.”
