A simple meal delivered to a senior’s home benefits the senior and the community, National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) members learned.
NARFE Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting Tuesday at Ryan’s Buffet in Waxahachie. The guest speaker was Lisa Deese, Community Development Coordinator with Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties.
Meals-on-Wheels of Ellis and Johnson Counties is a community-based, nonprofit organization that serves needy elderly and disabled persons throughout Johnson and Ellis Counties. Founded in 1977, the organization currently serves a total of 2,400 elderly and disabled persons per year in a two-county service area that covers over 1,700 square miles. The program receives 30 percent of its funding from federal and state resources and 70 percent from local sources. Volunteers serve 700 meals per day in 30 different communities. In addition, there is a breakfast program that is funded completely from local sources.
While Texas is third highest in the nation regarding senior hunger, a challenge of the organization is to encourage seniors who need the assistance to participate. The program has many direct and indirect benefits including: helping feed the hungry, break the isolation of many lonely days, allowing people to live independently in their own homes and maintain their dignity, helping families better care for their loved ones and preventing premature nursing home placements, helping our Johnson and Ellis County communities to foster the positive community spirit of people helping people and improving the overall quality of life. All of this helps seniors stay at home which is very cost effective compared with other living arrangements.
The organization needs volunteers for home delivery, funds to operate and referrals for those needing assistance. Contact to provide assistance or referrals may be made at http://www.servingthechildrenofyesterday.org/home or by phone at 817-558-2840 or 972-351-9943.
