Pettigrew Academy students gave away 100 free books on Tuesday, April 12. It was in honor of children’s author Beverly Cleary’s 100th birthday.

The event was marked the installation of a new Free Little Library box. The box is always available with free books for the neighborhood and features mainly children’s books. It will be restocked during the summer, so stop by often.

The students were read ‘Ramona’ by Beverly Cleary last month by parent volunteer Brenda Jeter. Students have free choice reading daily and often choose books by Beverly Cleary.

These books are available for check out at Sims library on Main Street.

The new flower bed was made by the Ellis County Master Gardeners during a recent work day. Pettigrew Academy has the oldest Junior Master Gardening program in a school in Ellis County.

Jr. Master Gardener teachers, Cerelda de Heus and Ruth Davis come weekly for instructional and hands on lessons about plants and our earth. Students will plant a tree for Earth Day near the wildlife garden. The school yard is a certified Wildlife Habitat.

Year end plans include a trip to the Meyerson Center for a special Cinco de Mayo symphony concert, Family and Friends game night with a quiz bowl, a bricks 4 kidz STEM activity, a swim party and two manner’s luncheons.

Pettigrew Academy is a private Montessori school at 806 East Marvin in Waxahachie. Summer camps are now open to the public. They are held Monday -Thursdays in June, 9 to noon and include cooking, ancient civilizations. math and science games, and arts and crafts. Email pettigrewacademy@aol.com for more information.
