Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties received a $3,000 grant from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in Subaru of America’s eighth annual Share the Love Event.

During the event held from Nov. 22, 2015 through Jan. 2, Subaru of America, Inc. donated $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased to the customer’s choice of four participating charities, including Meals on Wheels America, of which Meals-on-Wheels is a Member.

“We look forward to participating in the Share the Love Event each year,” said Vinsen Faris, Executive Director for Meals-on-Wheels. “It is a great opportunity to engage the community and bring to light senior issues such as hunger, isolation and loss of independence for our elderly neighbors.”

To promote awareness of the Share the Love event, Meals-on-Wheels participated in several holiday parades and partnered with local retailer, Hiley Subaru for the fourth consecutive year. Members of the Hiley staff volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels, delivering meals to elderly neighbors in Johnson County. Meals-on-Wheels created a media campaign to share photos, activities and stories of clients we serve utilizing the program’s Facebook page, Twitter and website blog to reach hundreds of supporters.

The 2015-2016 Share the Love grant funds will enable Meals-on-Wheels to expand its breakfast program, an initiative sustained by local dollars. The breakfast meal packages delivered Monday through Thursday ensure the most vulnerable meal recipients receive additional nourishment and support to keep them healthy and in their own homes where they want to be.
