Mt. Pleasant resident Joe L. Buford, 92, passed away on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Joe was born on Jan. 10, 1924 in Terrell, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife Faye A. Buford; mother and father Faye and Maury Buford; brother W.R. “Bill” Buford.
Joe was in the real estate and insurance business for 68 years. He was a veteran of World War II, which included 14 months in Germany with the 60th MP Company, as First Lieutenant.
Joe is a graduate of Terrell High School and Texas A&M University, with a bachelor's degree in economics and sociology. A member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club for 68 years, a director of Guaranty Bond Bank Mt. Pleasant for 31 years. He was married to Faye Adams Buford for 68 years.
He is survived by four daughters: Celine Allan, of Dallas, Texas; Cassandra Houlihan and husband Bernie, of Dallas, Texas; Bette Lynne and husband Kim, of College Station, Texas; and Amanda Hawkins and husband Kenny, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; three sons: Lee Buford, of Dallas, Texas; Maury Burford and wife Dana, of Grapevine, Texas; Thomas Buford and wife Charlotte, of Waxahachie, Texas; 13 grandchildren: Bryce Bufford; Callie Keable and husband Brian; Bristal Buford; Taylor Lynne; Brooke Kiecke and husband Chase; Savannah Allan; Lamar Allan, Joseph Edward Buford; Lee Michael rhea and wife Charity; Amber Rhea; Justin Hawkins and Jarred Hawkins and wife Ashlie; six great-grandchildren; foster son Donny Richardson and wife Sandy.
Joe has been a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant for 68 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Buford was a member of the Mt. Pleasant city council, Mt. Pleasant city zoning board and the Mt. Pleasant city park board.
Joe was a past president of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club, Titus A&M Club, Mt. Pleasant Booster Club and Mt. Pleasant Little League; and vice president of the Texas A&M “Aggie Club.” He was also on the board of directors for Mt. Pleasant's First National Bank, a member of the finance committee of St. Michael's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received the Distinguished Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Lions Club International meeting in 2015.
A Rosary will be held from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, and visitation will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at St. Michael's Catholic Church under the direction of Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be Bishop Joseph Strickland; the Rev. Steve Paradis, the Rev. Octovia Suarez and the Rev. Patrick Hartnett. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers include Art Scharlach, Danny Bockman, Weldon Miller, Charles Newman, Joe Giamfortone and Lance Lowery.
Honorary pallbearers are Joe Redfearn, Mickey Jeff, Kerry Wooten, Hudson Old, Danny Hightower, members of the board of directors of Guaranty Bank & Trust, and directors of the Lions Club.
