The Ellis County Sheriff ’s Office announces the seizure of 14.3 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $650,000.

The drug bust occurred as the result of a traffic stop near the 407-mile marker on northbound Interstate 35E at about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 21.

Sheriff’s K-9 units Cpl. Mike McCorkle and Deputy Klinton Valley were on routine patrol when they observed a Ford Expedition traveling at an excessive speed and tailgating a vehicle in front of it.

A traffic stop was made on the Expedition and contact was made with the male driver and a female passenger, with the deputies detecting possible criminal behavior from each of the vehicle’s occupants. The driver, identified as Nelson Guerra, 27, of Duncanville, gave consent to a search of the vehicle. The sheriff ’s K-9 was deployed and alerted to the presence of contraband, with a subsequent search revealing a large amount of a white powder-like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Guerra and the passenger, identified as Yurydia Jannet Rios, 27, of Seagoville were taken into custody and booked into Wayne McCollum Detention Center on a felony charge of possession of

a controlled substance, greater than 400 grams. Both have since been re- leased on bonds of $50,000 each.
