The Greater New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Missionary Department will hold a fundraiser on at 11 a.m. on Feb. 13 at 205 Eggar Street in Waxahachie.
With Pastor Dr. Lee W. Turner, the department will present a black history program called “The Pleasant Hill Quilting Group.”
This Linden, Texas based group will illustrate how secret codes in quilt patterns were used in the Underground Railroad. The women, dressed in 19th century attire, will describe how each pattern in the quilts, and words in songs, helped slaves escape to the northern U.S. and Canada before President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.
Soul food will be served following the program.
